Film Poster Progression

In this blog post I will be uploading images of the progression from when i was creating my film poster.


To edit mt film poster I used photoshop, I started with a blank document and then chose an image from my trailer to use as a background. By adding the tag lines and reviews made my poster look more authentic and realistic. I then added the release date and the production company logos along with the billing. The image that i chose for the back ground I edited to the negative effect, this gave it a supernatural and spooky feeling to it. The black background for the billing, release date and production company logo is in place in order for it to stand out. 








Crew Members For The Billing

When I make my billing the actors are going to be names of people that I have made-up, but the crew members are going to be well-known people that have actually had a role in producing previous horror films. I am going to research different people in order to see who is the most suitable for the type of film that i will be creating. This will reinforce a sense of realism to my poster.

Potential Directors- 
James Wan

  • James is a Malaysian born Australian film director, screenwriter and producer. He has previously directed Dead Silence, Death Sentence, Insidious, The Conjuring and Insidious
  • Mainly James Wan focuses on lengthy mainstream films 
  • He is a suitable director for my film as all the films he's involved with contain a supernatural being. 

Stanley Kubrick-
  • He is an American film director, screen writer, producer, cinematographer, editor and photographer. He is seen as one of the most influential directors. His films are typically adaptations of novels or short stories. He covers a wide range of genres and he is recognised for his sense of realism, dark humour, cinematography, set designs and music.
  • Stanley Kubrick is best known for The Shining, which is one of the most recognisable horror movies.
  • Stanley passed away in 1999, even though he would be a good director for my billing it would not seem realistic 



Producer-
Jason Blum-

  • Jason specialises in American Film production, he is also the founder of Blumhouse productions, this is the company i will be using for my film 
  • In 2014 he won the primetime Emmy award for outstanding television movie. 
  • He has participated in many supernatural horror films for example: Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Sinister, Ouija, The Visit and many other films
  • His experience would promote my film in a really positive way, he is a popular producer and people think very highly of him in the film industry



Casting by- 
Joan Philo- 

  • She has been known for: A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Dark Night, Batman, Columbiana, Transformers and The Fugitive. There are many films she has participated in casting. 

 Jordan Bass-

  • Known for Anabelle, Blood is Blood, The Monster Project, Time Lapse and many other films, including short films
  • I chose to use him because of his experience in short films 
  • Jordan Bass is not as well known therefore I will be using Joan Philo 

Music by-
Joesph Bishara-

  • Best known for his work on the Conjuring, Anabelle, Insidious and Insidious 2
  • He is a very well known composer 


Costume- 
Janet Ingram-

  • Previously she has designed costumes for: The Conjuring, Insidious, Stolen, Anabelle, Death Sentence and many other films
  • She seemed to of designed costumes for many different horror and action films 

Production Designer-
Bill Boes-

  • He has previously been involved in the production design for: Sinister 2, the nightmare before christmas and incarnate 


Art Director- 
Jason Garner-

  • Jason has been involved as the art director for the films: The Descendants, Insidious 2, Incarnate, Halloween, Paranormal Activity and Fear of the Walking Dead 

Special Effects- 
Sergio Stivaletti-

  • Best known for Dracula, The Wax Mask, Undead Men and many other films from all different genres 


Director of photography- 
James Kneist-

  • James Kneist is a cinematographer who has done many films and short films 
  • for example: Anabelle, The hunted and The Last Witch Hunter 


Editor- 
Ken Blackwell-

  • Ken is a very highly respected editor, he has participated in all kinds of films from different genres 
  • For example- Transformers, RIPD, The Expendables, Jurassic Park, Hancock, Hunters Prayer, Sinister, Ouija, Friday The 13th and The Butcher 


Writer- 
Scott Derrickson-

  • Is very well known for writing horror films for many supernatural films 
  • For example- Sinister, Deliver Us From Evil, Devil's Knot, The Exorcism and Hell Raiser: Inferno

When researching the crew members for my billing I tried to find the people who had been involved in popular horror films like Sinister and Ouija because these films were successful, meaning good marketing for my film.

Billing Analysis

The billing I am going to be looking at are on the posters of Sinister, Smiley and The Conjuring. Having a billing on my poster that looks authentic will really allow my film to seem realistic in the eyes of my audience. The billing will give credit to companies, actors, directors, producers and other crew members.













Now that I have looked at these I am able to see that this is the information presented in the billing (this is in the correct order):

  1. The production companies 
  2. Name of the director
  3. Name of the writer
  4. Main actor name
  5. Name of film 
  6. Other various actors 
  7. Names and job titles of other important crew members: Casting, Music, Costumes, Editor, Production Designer, Director of photography, Executive producers, Art director, Special effects, 
  8. Producer/s name again 
  9. Who the film was written by
  10. Directors name
Most of the billing from the different film posters i looked at had the billing in a very similar order. I can now produce my own billing to this order to make it look as genuine as possible. 



Production Companies

A big part of film making is the production company, it is responsible for the fund-raising of the production, or this can often be accomplished through a parent company, partner or private investor. The production company deals with the majority of the film marketing, distribution, scheduling and scripting. A big part in making my film seem as realistic as possible is having a production company that suits the genre of my film.

These are a few production companies that I believe would be suitable for my film:


1. BLUMHOUSE PRODUCTIONS 
  • Their previous films consist of Paranormal activity, Sinister, The purge and Ouija
  • It is an American horror movie company founded by Jason Blum. They deal with low budget horror films
  • The company never spend more that 5 million dollars on the films 
  • For Paranormal activity the budget was 15,000 dollar, their profit was 193 million dollars 
  • This would be a good company for my film as they mainly deal with supernatural horrors, this is what my film is going to be.

2. DARK CASTLE ENTERTAINMENT
  • They are responsible for films such as- Thirteen Ghosts, House of Wax, The Reaping, Orphan and The Summoner
  • This company focuses on low-mid budget films, it is responsible for the action and adventure genre, thrillers and comic book, but their main focal point is Horror 
  • They are another American film productions label, part of Silver Pictures which is associated with Warner Bros. 
  • It is a company formed in 1999 by Joel Silver, Robert Zemeckis and Gilber Adler. 

3. BENDERSPINK 



  • Benderspink is a production company created by Chris Bender and J.C Spink
  • The films that they have been involved in making are- The Ring, Insanitarium, Kill Theory and The Butterfly Effect 
  • They make low budget horror films, most horror films are low budget but it takes a good production company with good marketing strategies to be able to make a larger profit at the box office 

4.  DEL TORO PRODUCTION 

  • It is created by Guillermo Del Toro, he is a Mexican film director, producer, screen writer and novel writer. 
  • The films he has produced are Mama, The Orphanage, Splice, Van Helsing, Crimson Peak and Frankenstein 
  • The company has also been part of gothic horrors such as Pans Labyrinth and The Devils Backbone and other mainstream american horror movies
  • This production company may not be as suitable for my movie as the company mainly focuses on a hybrid of horror and fantasy, my movie is supernatural horror, this means that the production company must specialise in horror or supernatural horror 
5. CIRCLE OF CONFUSION 

  • They have been involved in: S&Man, Senseless, Vanishing on Seventh Street, Blood of the Innocent, The Kitchen Sink, The Gatekeeper and Driving While dead
  • This company does horror but its main focus is on Comedic Horror fare. 


For my production company I have decided to use BLUMHOUSE PRODUCTIONS, this is because they specifically produce horror films, and the films that they have produced previously are  in the supernatural genre of horror. They specialise in low-budget movies, and my film is more likely to be portrayed as a low budget film.




Tag Lines of Existing Horror Film Posters

Tagline's are important in the marketing of films, when it comes to making my tagline I must make sure that I have produced a successful tagline. The audience are enticed by the tagline, it is a dramatic phrase that will either sum up or give a hint into the film.

 From looking at these tag lines I can see that they all share similar concepts. Each tagline is speaking directly to the person reading it, for example using words like 'You' and 'Your', this creates the feeling that the evil character in the film is out to get us as well. Most of the tag lines are also phrased like a warning or an instruction telling us what not to do, this is clever because many of the warnings that are used are out of our control, and we cannot help doing these things. The film tag lines become a method of expressing the theme or appeal of the film.

Possible Fonts for My Film Poster

My film is going to be called 'Grandma's House', it is about a grandmothers spirit that is haunting her family when they stay in her house to attend the funeral. Because it is about the supernatural, I need to give a chilling and spooky feel for the audience when they see the title. These are 10 possible fonts that I will be looking to use:

The reason why I chose to use this is because it has harsh and crooked lettering, it is unsettling for the audience. The strange shaping also contributes to the awkward and weird feel to it.

This font is different to others, the scratch marks on the letters makes the film look violent 


3. 

It is bold and standouts, if i make this font a silver glow to it then the supernatural effect will really be shown 

4. 

This font reminds me more of vampires or bats, because it has a very old feel to it, but at the same time it suits the name of the film

This is another spooky font, the dripping of the ink gives it an eery feel, this is one of my favourite fonts that I have come across

I have chosen to look at this font because the lettering is wonky and seems out of place, this is similar to the feeling on the first font i looked at because it makes the audience feel unsettled.

Font Research for My Film Poster

My genre is horror, therefore I must select a font that clearly portrays that my film is horror.
An example of successful fonts used in horror poster are shown in these posters:



Both these films share a very similar font, it is spooky and eery, it has a slight glow to the background this gives a sort of mysterious feel for the audience. Parts of the letters glow more than others, this makes me think that there may be some sort of possession or evil that is involved in the film. The difference between the two is that 'Shrooms' is in capitals whereas 'the strangers' is in lower case, to me capitals gives it a more bold look and it stands out more, as a pose to lower case where it blends into the background slightly more but at the same time it has a spookier feel to it.


The use of red and orange is more gory and violent. These colour suggest that the film is going to be more of a slasher horror film, it may contain more blood and torture compared to whites and silvers. Both these films are in capital letters in a bright colour on a dark background, clearly the producers want the name of film to stand out above everything else. 


These two have a very similar style, they are almost the same fonts, what is interesting is that whilst the fonts are so simple, the spookiness and supernatural feel to it is strong that by just looking at this you can get chills. The small details that have been added to the letters is what makes it so successful at projecting the feeling of the movie onto the audience. 

From looking at all of this I have grasped onto the sort of font I am looking to find, the more gory my film will be means that the lettering will be more bold and stand out, whereas if my film is focusing on supernatural aspect the colours have to be dull and spooky.
